CARVER-EDISTO MIDDLE SCHOOL POWER OF “I” POLICY
In accordance with the CEMS School Mission to foster academic excellence the faculty has developed a “Power of I” policy for students where failure to complete assignments at an acceptable level is not an option.
ZEROS – All students will be required to make up all missed work. Students who miss a planned test or project on the date it is due will be required to make up the test or hand in the project the day he/she returns to school. Students with legal absences have up to 5 days to make up any missed work. They may make up this on their work on their own time or may opt to complete the work or make up a missed test during the school day in study hall. If a student misses 3 or more consecutive days, the parent may call the guidance department and request assignments. Teachers are given a 24 hour notice to supply missed work. Additionally, teachers are required to list assignments on the WEB. Students who simply fail to complete classwork, homework assignments, or tests when in school will be required to make up the work. Students will receive a grade of “1” in Power School until the work is made up. The “1” will be replaced with a number grade after the work is completed. By the end of the grading period, if a student has failed to make up any missed homework, classwork, test, or project, they will receive a grade of “Zero”.
MAJOR ASSIGNMENTS AND RE-DO’S – Students who score a 69% or less on a major assessment will be required to re-do the assignment. Teachers will conference with each
student about the assignment the student must re-do. Teachers will re-teach standards as necessary. The new assignment will address the same concepts but will not necessarily contain the same items. The student will be required to re-do the assignment. The grade recorded will be the highest grade received. No “re-do’s” will be allowed for assignments earning a “70” or higher. The “Re-Do” Policy will not apply to G&T math and English classes or high school credit classes.
EXTRA CREDIT – Extra credit may not be given to replace an assignment or a test not completed by a student. Extra Credit may be added to a test or an assignment as a BONUS question, as a part of a review for an upcoming major assessment, or as an assignment designed to go above or beyond the curriculum for students who have mastered the concepts being taught.
EXTRA HELP – Students, who need Extra Help based on their MAP scores and/or their classroom grades will be scheduled for enrichment classes during sixth period.
LOWEST GRADE – At the end of each quarter, students who fail to complete an assignment or test regardless of all attempts to get him or her to complete the work will receive a grade of “zero”. For all original or re-do assignments or tests, students will receive the highest grade earned. Teachers have the option to drop the lowest homework, classwork, or quiz grade for each student every quarter. No major assignment grades will be dropped.
